Because of myrrh's various medicinal uses this gift represents Christ's human nature, the Suffering Savior, the Great Physician, and the Passion. Myrrh has been used since ancient times as a sacred incense, a perfume, and as a therapeutic agent. It has a rich, smoky, balsamic odor and is soothing to the skin, centering, visualizing and meditative. Myrrh is one of the oldest-known perfume materials and has a long history of use as incense, especially with frankincense. Myrrh functions as an insect repellent, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory agent, and emollient. It blends well with clove, lavender, patchouli, and sandalwood.
